About The Position

SMX is seeking a skilled and experienced Computer Support Specialist to support operations in an embedded lab environment at NAWCAD, Patuxent River, MD. This individual will join a team responsible for administering and maintaining VMware platforms and Windows-based application servers, including SQL and other enterprise services. The Specialist will ensure lab systems are configured, secured, and maintained in compliance with DoD standards. Core responsibilities include supporting VMware environments, managing Windows servers and applications, applying STIGs and patches, conducting ACAS scans, and developing automation to streamline compliance and administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Clearance Required: Top Secret
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related IT/server administration experience.
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level II compliant (minimum acceptable certifications include CCNA Security, CySA+, GSEC, Security+ CE, or SSCP).
  • Proficiency with Windows Server administration, including Group Policy and scripting.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware administration.
  • Familiarity with SQL and other enterprise application servers.
  • Working knowledge of DoD IA practices, including STIGs, patching, backups, and ACAS scans.
  • Experience developing and maintaining scripts (PowerShell preferred).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact across technical teams and leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field.
  • Advanced experience with VMware administration.
  • Broader exposure to automation and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Ansible).
  • Familiarity with DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day administration of VMware environments and Windows application servers (including SQL).
  • Apply security and functional patches in accordance with DoD baselines and hardening requirements.
  • Perform compliance assurance tasks, including STIG application, backup validation, and ACAS scanning across lab devices.
  • Support OS and application software at the server level, troubleshooting incidents and ensuring timely resolution.
  • Administer Group Policy to support enterprise and lab requirements.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts to improve patching, compliance, and system administration efficiency.
  • Document technical actions, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions in the ticketing system.
  • Collaborate with peers, management, and senior engineers to maintain reliable lab operations and ensure positive customer experience.
