About The Position

This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the Transit Department’s Fixed Route buses, Spec-Trans vans and staff cars. This position also fuels the vehicles and reports vehicle problems immediately to a mechanic so that repairs and maintenance are performed in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of six months of general labor experience preferred.
  • A Valid Texas Driver’s License is required.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle that is in excess of 30' in length.
  • Ability to drive all Transit Department vehicles.
  • Ability to fuel vehicles that use diesel or gasoline.
  • Ability to read, write, hear and verbally communicate.
  • Ability to exhibit a cooperative attitude and promote teamwork with co-workers.
  • Ability to understand and apply the Transit Department’s policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and perception needed to make sound observations and decisions.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under stress and think clearly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to understand the basic operational aspects of a large motor vehicle.
  • Ability to understand and interpreting the functions of all gauges and switches on the control panel in order to detect mechanical problems.
  • Possess problem solving skills and have the ability to respond with tact in every situation.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervisory personnel.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and report to work drug and alcohol free.

Responsibilities

  • Fuels each Transit Department vehicle.
  • Runs each vehicle thru the bus wash or if necessary hand washes the exterior of each vehicle, and parks each vehicle in the barn.
  • Performs work at the City Service Center, the Bus Transfer Station, bus shelters and bus stops, but may not leave the Service Center parking lot with a Transit Department fixed route or paratransit vehicle.
  • Cleans the interior of each vehicle including cleaning the windows inside and out, sweeping and moping the interior, and performing a detail cleaning of the vehicles on a rotating basis as time permits.
  • Completes paperwork associated with the fueling and cleaning of each vehicle.
  • Cleans the Transfer Station on a rotating basis every week.
  • Performs periodic maintenance to the bus wash, which includes draining all water supply pipes and hoses when the temperature drops below freezing, making sure the heater is functioning properly to prevent damage to the unit, making sure there is an ample supply of liquid detergent and water softening salt at the bus wash and reporting to the Safety and Training Supervisor or Mechanic Foreperson I when the supplies are low.
  • Ensures the track is free of obstacles that may prevent the smooth operation of the bus wash.
  • If a problem occurs with the bus wash, turns off the power and water supply, documents what happened and reports the situation to the Safety and Training Operations Supervisor, Mechanic Foreperson I, any other available member of management or the dispatchers.
  • Opens up the bus wash each day and secures the bus wash building each night.
  • Helps organize and assign duties to the Extra Board Operators that are assigned park and clean duties each evening.
  • Changes the vaults in each vehicle each evening, maintains an inventory of cleaning supplies and labels all chemicals with their correct S.D.S. number and performs other duties as assigned
  • Drives each vehicle in a manner that will prevent any accidents, incidents or injuries in all types of weather and road conditions, understands and applies pertinent laws and rules that regulate the operation of large motor vehicles and complies with the City of Amarillo’s Footwear Program by wearing the approved safety shoes.
  • Report to work on time, reports all absences in a timely manner and avoids unexcused absences.
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with all persons contacted while performing their duties.
  • Complies with the uniform, shoe, hair and beard policies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
