The Utility Worker I position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing water distribution and wastewater collection systems for the City of Augusta's water utility. This role involves assisting maintenance and operations personnel, performing various utility-related duties, and ensuring safety protocols are followed during work activities. The position requires flexibility in working hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call duties.

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer lines and related system components.
  • Assists with the installation of new sewer taps and clears debris from manholes, water and sewer lines.
  • Inspects and evaluates the condition of systems, diagnosing leaks, blockages, or other problems.
  • Excavates around water and sewer mains and performs saw cuts on driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads.
  • Replaces service lines and performs confined space entries in manholes.
  • Cleans manholes and changes out sewer rings and replaces lids on manholes.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on facility equipment and grounds.
  • Receives and completes work orders and gathers tools and equipment needed for work activities.
  • Picks up and transports materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Performs general maintenance such as carpentry and plumbing.
  • Operates and maintains various tools and equipment necessary for essential functions.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • One year of experience in construction, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and apply departmental policies and procedures.
  • Mastery of using standard tools, power tools, and operating machinery.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair techniques.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow direction and work independently.
  • Understanding of workplace safety principles.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a good driving history.
