About The Position

Bridgewater College is seeking a skilled Utility Technician with a background in carpentry and general maintenance trades to support campus facilities operations. This hands-on role includes carpentry, painting, and general repair work that helps keep our campus safe, functional, and well-maintained. Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 as a coeducational liberal arts college to serve the local community. Located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, just minutes outside of Harrisonburg and within driving distance of Charlottesville, Washington D.C., and Richmond, Bridgewater is home to a total student body of approximately 1,450 from 27 states and 19 countries. Bridgewater students study more than 60 majors and minors, in addition to four graduate programs and 10 pre-professional programs. Bridgewater College is an NCAA DIII school with approximately 40 percent of its students participating in intercollegiate athletics on 26 teams.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of experience in carpentry, maintenance, or related skilled trades
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, tools, and finishing techniques
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment safely and effectively
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Perform carpentry repairs, installations, and general maintenance across campus
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and work orders to complete projects accurately
  • Repair and install doors, windows, hardware, flooring, ceiling tile, and fixtures
  • Complete surface preparation and finishing work (painting, staining, sealing, patching)
  • Perform minor drywall, plaster, wood, and masonry repairs
  • Estimate materials and maintain tools and supply inventory
  • Ensure quality work using measuring, leveling, and layout tools
  • Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner
  • Assist with material handling, deliveries, and contractor coordination
  • Assist with snow removal and emergency response as needed
  • Support campus and event setup and breakdown
  • Work safely using ladders, lifts, and other equipment, following all safety procedures
