About The Position

The Utility Technician at Peoples Gas System is responsible for the operation, service, and maintenance of natural gas pipelines and related equipment. This role involves both indoor and outdoor manual labor, ensuring the safety of employees and customers while performing various tasks related to gas distribution systems and metering equipment. The technician will also respond to emergencies and provide leadership to less experienced team members as needed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record; a CDL may be required for certain positions.
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience in a similar role or 3 to 4 years of natural gas operations experience.
  • Ability to proficiently perform all functions of the PGS Apprentice Utility Technician position.
  • Basic map reading skills and ability to operate a computer and communication devices.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, basic algebra, and geometry.
  • Sound judgment and ability to follow complex instructions.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 3-4 years performing the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Knowledge of the geographic area.

Responsibilities

  • Reads meters and meter instruments, turns on and off residential and commercial gas service, appliances and equipment.
  • Sets and changes out residential and commercial meters/regulators.
  • Investigates metering equipment related to residential and commercial high-bill complaints or unusual low consumption readings.
  • Fabricates and joins various types and sizes of gas piping/fittings including gas mains, services, and meter sets.
  • Installs and maintains pipe in accordance with construction and maintenance standards.
  • Operates various equipment such as boring equipment, hydraulic tools, and backhoe.
  • Performs locating of underground natural gas systems.
  • Conducts compliance inspections related to Cathodic Protection, corrosion, and leak surveys.
  • Responds to leaks and emergency situations, completing appropriate reports and forms.
  • Provides leadership and training to Apprentices or less experienced team members.
