About The Position

The Utility Technician I utilizes physical labor to assist in water and wastewater line repair, replacement, and installation, excavation, and traffic control. This role involves operating heavy equipment and specialty equipment for the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and sewer projects, while strictly adhering to all safety policies. The technician performs a variety of skilled and non-skilled tasks, which vary based on career ladder progression. In the absence of a crew leader, the Utility Technician I is responsible for managing materials and crew members.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
Class A CDL License and Tanker Endorsement
TCEQ Licenses D Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection I

Responsibilities

Repairs water and wastewater lines; cleans and inspects pipes; installs repair parts and evaluates effectiveness of repair.
Installs water and wastewater infrastructure including, but not limited to, mains, services, and laterals; taps and meters; valves; manholes; air relief valves; fire hydrants; cleanouts, etc.
Assists in excavation; operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock from excavations; uses probe to locate pipes.
Cleans wastewater lines; uses hand and / or machine rods to unclog or clean mains & laterals.
Performs line locates of water and wastewater infrastructure in accordance with Texas One Call laws.
Cleans & maintains tools and equipment.
Drives various trucks, primarily dump trucks, to haul material related to the repair and installation of water and wastewater infrastructure.
Loads, unloads, and operates dump trucks and other heavy equipment.
Installs traffic control in strict accordance with state and federal manuals of traffic control devices.
Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
