About The Position

As a Utility Projects Engineer at Switch, you will be part of a world-class team that operates in excellence, delivering mission-critical solutions that redefine whats possible in AI, cloud and enterprise data center needs. Your work will directly impact the future of technology and the sustainable growth of the Internet. In this role you will support Switch Data Centers by leading high-level substation and transmission planning and providing construction support for Switch-owned and utility-sourced projects. You will bridge Development, Design Engineering, and internal teams to ensure reliable, scalable electric utility service for mission-critical data centers. Responsibilities include conceptual substation layouts, utility interconnection and infrastructure planning, technical evaluations, project due diligence, and support of site development, construction, commercial agreements, and operations. You will also manage coordination with utilities and local stakeholders across North America and provide technical guidance on utility-related engineering studies, including generator interconnections.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering or related discipline preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in substation, transmission, or utility project engineering.
  • Knowledge of utility interconnection processes and substation design principles.
  • Experience working with or for electric utilities, EPC firms or large industrial customers focusing on electric utility infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical or datacenter electric infrastructure projects.
  • Electric Utility Industry knowledge.
  • Transmission and Substation Experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Procore, Bluebeam, AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Substation and Transmission Planning: Lead high-level substation and transmission efforts for new and expanding Switch campuses.
  • Technical Documentations : Develop conceptual one-line diagrams, substation arrangements, and transmission interconnect strategies during early-stage development.
  • Utility Ownership Evaluation: Evaluate utility-served vs. Switch-owned infrastructure options to determine the most reliable and cost-effective solutions. Oversee the study process until final submission, ensuring approval from the Power, Construction, and Development Teams.
  • Utility Power Delivery Standards Evaluation: Assist internal Switch Engineering teams with interpreting and applying utility interconnection standards to ensure compliant and efficient substation designs and power delivery from source utilities.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance through design and construction to maintain consistency with project intent and utility requirements.
  • Communication and Coordination: Serve as technical interface between Switch, utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Utility Equipment Procurement: Document and assist with procurement with Switch Supply Chain for needed long lead equipment to meet Switchs in service dates. Support with technical specifications and equipment evaluations.
  • Strategic Capacity Planning: Participate and facilitate strategic long term power capacity planning and architecture for current and planned Switch campuses as related to Switch owned electrical infrastructure or utility provided infrastructure.
  • Interconnection Agreements: Oversee generator interconnection studies and associated input gathering from internal parties within Switch and the Utility.
