The Utility Plant Technician Trainee position at the City of El Paso, TX, is designed for individuals seeking to gain hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water or wastewater treatment systems and equipment. This role operates under immediate supervision and serves as a training classification, providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of a Utility Plant Technician. The successful candidate will be required to complete a six-week Success Through Technology Education (STTE) Foundation training course, as well as the El Paso Water (EPW) Basic Water or Wastewater training course, to ensure they are well-prepared for the responsibilities ahead. The training will involve both classroom sessions and field training. In the classroom, trainees will learn how to monitor and control water and wastewater treatment processes and equipment, including the principles and practices of water and wastewater monitoring. They will also learn to conduct laboratory tests of water or wastewater, ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations. Field training will focus on the proper operation of various equipment such as gauges, meters, pumps, and chemical feeders. Trainees will gain practical experience in performing installation, preventative maintenance, and repairs on treatment systems and complex equipment, including pumps, motors, and chlorinators. Upon successful completion of the six-month on-the-job training program, the trainee will be eligible for a regular Utility Plant Technician position, marking a significant step in their career within the City of El Paso's water and wastewater services.
