Responsible for skilled work in the operation and maintenance of one or more wastewater treatment plants. Monitors the biological process to ensure that the plant is in permit compliance with state and federal regulatory agency discharge requirements. Verifies operational targets and settings, calibrates meters, and verifies equipment and process control targets are within specified ranges. Performs laboratory tests and biological analyses on influent, effluent, and mixed liquor; records results; oversees the duties of Operators on a specific shift and ensures that overall plant process targets and utility goals and objectives are being met. May coordinate and facilitate training and prepare operating reports as directed. This position may have lead operator responsibilities on an assigned shift. Work is performed in accordance with established practices and procedures. Duties require the exercise of independent judgement. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Chief Water/Wastewater Plant Operator or Superintendent, who reviews work for conformance with established standards and procedures.
