About The Position

The position involves performing various tasks related to the maintenance and repair of underground mains and distribution pipes for American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S. The role requires a focus on safety, precision, and compliance with environmental regulations while ensuring effective communication and collaboration with team members.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain DEP Water Class E operator's license as per union contract.
  • Skillful use of hand tools or machines needed for work.
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions, safety rules, maps, diagrams, etc.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with company personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in operating pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Locate, lay, repair, and extend underground mains and distribution pipes.
  • Set up barricades and place safety lights around work sites to protect workers from street traffic.
  • Break up asphalt and concrete using pneumatic power tools for trenching and compaction.
  • Manually dig valve boxes and curb boxes using a shovel and digging bar.
  • Guide pipe sections, valves, and fittings into position and hold pieces steady while workers tighten connections.
  • Tap into pressurized water mains and flare and connect copper and plastic piping.
  • Install repair clamps on pressurized water mains and service lines.
  • Operate valves and fire hydrants.
  • Investigate complaints and determine corrective action per company procedure.
  • Operate pneumatic and/or hydraulic boring equipment.
  • Complete necessary forms, sketches, and field notes, and be knowledgeable of maps and records usage.
  • Drive vehicles and/or trucks in performance of general job duties, including housekeeping of the vehicle.
  • Use company technology to perform assigned duties.
  • Ensure environmental compliance with DEP and other government agencies and company regulations.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies, practices, and procedures.
