About The Position

The Utility Operator provides 24/7 monitoring and maintenance of the facility's critical utility infrastructure. While supporting Stationary Engineers and Boiler Operators in the Central Utility Plant (CUP), this role primarily performs general facility-wide rounds to detect and resolve malfunctions in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems. The Utility Operator ensures the continuous functionality of the medical center through proactive inspections and the use of DMLSS/LogiCole for logging all rounds and maintenance activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a healthcare or industrial setting, preferably supporting a central utility plant or high-pressure steam environment.
  • High school diploma/GED or higher education.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, electronics, refrigeration, and plumbing principles for industrial facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret operations manuals, schematics, and shop drawings.
  • Skill and knowledge to use hand and power tools, test equipment, and shop machines utilized by the maintenance craft.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs, work on ladders/scaffolds, and enter confined spaces like ductwork, pits, and crawl spaces.
  • Must pass a background check for military installation access.

Nice To Haves

  • Qualified Boiler Operator or BOC (Building Operator Certification).
  • Universal CFC/ESCO Institute Certification for HVAC/Refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Stationary Engineers/Boiler operators in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of industrial HVACR, steam, and high-pressure gas systems.
  • Conduct regular floor rounds to detect and monitor malfunctions in building-wide utility systems, including elevators, lighting, and kitchen equipment.
  • Assist in taking water samples and performing simple chemical tests for boiler feed water and closed-loop HVAC systems to ensure compliance with SOW standards.
  • Perform servicing of pumps, valves, air handling units (AHUs), and cooling towers, including lubrication, belt replacements, and cleaning.
  • Execute a variety of duties related to trouble calls and scheduled PMs within assigned timeframes, ensuring minimal impact on hospital operations.
  • Monitor and assist in the maintenance of medical gas distribution systems and fire/life safety components under the direction of lead trades.
  • Document all work performed, including time and materials used.
  • Strictly adhere to OSHA rules, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA), and Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) protocols.
  • All other duties as assigned.
