About the position

The Utility Maintenance Worker position at the City of Elmhurst is a semi-skilled role responsible for operating and maintaining the city's utility systems, including water, wastewater, and stormwater. The position involves performing general maintenance tasks, assisting with leak detection, and operating various equipment related to utility maintenance. The role requires manual labor and participation in the construction and repair of utility lines and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the City of Elmhurst Utility systems (water, wastewater, and stormwater).
  • Perform general maintenance functions on utility assets, including underground water, sanitary, and storm systems.
  • Assist with leak detection, sanitary sewer monitoring, and sampling.
  • Operate equipment such as air compressors, jackhammers, concrete saws, and valve turning machines.
  • Participate in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water, sanitary, and storm sewer lines, inlets, and manholes.
  • Assist in repairs/replacement of water services, water main breaks, water valves, hydrants, and installation of water taps.
  • Assist in operations of televising/flushing equipment.
  • Drive medium to heavy-duty trucks for hauling materials and equipment.
  • Perform manual work in cleaning and repairing work sites.
  • Conduct snow removal and salting of roadways.
  • Complete routine reports on work performed using a computerized management maintenance system.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems (for Utility Maintenance Worker II).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems (for Utility Maintenance Worker I).
  • Possess a Class A-CDL license with air-brake endorsement or ability to obtain one within one year of hire.
  • Possess a Class D water and collections system license (for Utility Maintenance Worker I).
  • Experience in operations of backhoe and end loader equipment, as well as driving heavy construction and sewer flushing/televising equipment is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising maintenance workers is preferred.
