About The Position

The City of Olathe’s Utility Maintenance group is currently accepting applications for a Utility Maintenance Worker. Our Utility Maintenance team plays a crucial role in keeping Olathe's water flowing smoothly! Join us and be part of the dynamic group responsible for maintaining and enhancing the water distribution and wastewater collection systems that are vital to our community's daily life. As a Utility Maintenance Worker, you’ll work performing a variety of duties such as hand excavation, heavy lifting, hauling materials, operating tools and equipment, repairing and performing maintenance on water systems, locating water and sewer infrastructure, programming AMI (Automated Metering Infrastructure) water meters and data entry into the work order system. Our crews report to a central work location each day to get their tasks and work throughout Olathe city limits. This position allows you the opportunity to obtain a Class A CDL by participating in the City of Olathe's CDL training program, completing within the first 6 months of employment. No experience is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Pay Range: $19.75/hour to $24.10/hour, depending on experience. Utility Maintenance Worker II: One year of construction or maintenance experience is required. Water and/or wastewater experience, utility locating and/or AMI water meter/meter reading experience is preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Pay Range: $21.75/hour to $26.51/hour depending on experience. Utility Maintenance Worker III: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of public utilities, water, or wastewater facilities and equipment is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class I ABC certification in Water or Wastewater is required. Pay Range: $23.75/hour to $29.11/hour depending on experience. Work schedule: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. The Utility Maintenance Worker I performs entry-level maintenance work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater collection system. They complete a variety of more routine tasks and duties from providing supplies to other workers to participating in the repair and preventive maintenance of water-distribution systems requiring potentially dangerous and hazardous conditions under the direct supervision of others. This is the first level in a three-level career progression of Utilities Maintenance Worker I, II, and III.

Requirements

  • No experience is required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required along with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required.
  • A class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement is required within six months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of a water or sewer infrastructure, water meter AMI (Automated Metering Infrastructure) and/or utility location is ideal but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs more routine work in preventive and breakdown maintenance for pumps, mixers, motors, valves, meters, water and wastewater lines, instrumentation, and other related devices of assigned facilities with direct supervision
  • monitors, reviews, and inspects utility lines with the proper equipment
  • maintains inspection equipment
  • participates in housekeeping duties, grounds and building maintenance
  • performs troubleshooting, repair and replacement duties for electrical and mechanical breakdowns.
  • Maintains safety and proper operation according to City regulation in all jobs performed including trench and confined space precautions
  • maintains traffic control of work sites by directing and guiding traffic and the placement of signs and devices to ensure a safe jobsite environment
  • works safely and collaboratively with other employees in the completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to work independently replacing and programming AMI water meters, performing move-ins and move-outs, and delinquent shut offs.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and vehicles including trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, pumps, and various other vehicles and equipment.
  • Utilize GIS mapping to determine water and sewer service areas, identify and locate Olathe water and sewer infrastructure and data entry documenting completed work.
  • Performs regular emergency duties, including frequent nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime hours as required to respond to emergency maintenance
