The current vacancy is in the Water Distribution section of Public Works - Utilities. The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be used for future vacancies in the other utilities sections within the City. The ideal candidate will be a motivated and dependable team player with a positive attitude and a strong desire to learn all aspects of underground water construction. This position is responsible for installing and repairing components of the City's water distribution system, including water services, valves, vaults, fire hydrants, and mainlines. The successful candidate will receive both hands-on and formal training in the operation of tools and equipment such as dump trucks, cement mixers, jackhammers, and soil compactors, as well as instruction in the safe and proper use of various hand and power tools. The Department The Public Works Department provides outstanding customer service and is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of public facilities and infrastructure. This requires us to respond to requests for service, coordinate efforts with local, regional, state, and federal agencies, and working with the community in all of our efforts. Public Works manages over 30% of the city's total budget, including three enterprise funds and seven designated funds, as well as the citywide capital improvement program. The five divisions in public works are committed to providing the highest quality of service to the community. These five divisions include Engineering, Utilities, Administration, Operations and Transportation. Utilities staff operates and maintains the City's water, wastewater, and storm drain systems. The Position The Utility Maintenance Worker performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance of water distribution or wastewater systems. Utility Maintenance Worker is an entry-level job class within the utility worker series. Incumbents perform a variety of maintenance work based on area of assignment. Work is of average difficulty and performed in accordance with established policies and procedures. Utility Maintenance Worker differs from Water Utility Worker in that the latter is a journey-level job with the acquired knowledge, skills and abilities in the specific work area to perform with minimal supervision. Incumbents may be assigned to water distribution or wastewater systems. Actual responsibilities vary according to assignment. Assignments are not interchangeable.
