About The Position

The City of Magnolia is seeking a skilled and dedicated Utility Maintenance Technician to join our Public Works/Utilities team. This full-time, non-exempt position is responsible for performing both skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater collection systems. You will play a vital role in ensuring safe and reliable utility services for residents and businesses by maintaining water lines, sewer mains, hydrants, valves, and associated infrastructure. The role entails both planned maintenance and emergency response duties, under the supervision of the Utility Maintenance Supervisor. With proven experience in utility maintenance, construction, or public works, the ideal candidate demonstrates a strong command of utility line installation and repair methods, as well as familiarity with the equipment involved. They possess the ability to operate tools and machinery both safely and efficiently, ensuring that projects are completed to a high standard while minimizing risk. Their excellent teamwork skills and professionalism shine through in interactions with the public, reflecting a commitment to service and effective collaboration. Flexible and dependable, they are willing to respond to after-hours emergencies and participate in the on-call rotation as needed. Above all, they are dedicated to safety and regulatory compliance, particularly with standards set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). This reliability, coupled with their organizational skills, allows them to work independently or seamlessly as part of a team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in public works, utilities, or construction preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to pass a drug/alcohol screen and background check.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Class C Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain a Class D Water License or Class I Wastewater Collection License (TCEQ) within one year of hire; higher-level TCEQ licenses preferred.
  • Ability to obtain required safety certifications (e.g., confined space, trench safety, traffic control) as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain water and wastewater lines, valves, hydrants, manholes, and meters.
  • Locate and repair water leaks and sewer stoppages using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Assist with water line taps, service connections, and disconnections.
  • Flush water lines and fire hydrants to maintain water quality and pressure.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain lift stations, pumps, and related utility equipment.
  • Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment (e.g., backhoes, compactors, trenchers).
  • Assist with water meter reading, testing, and replacement as required.
  • Respond to emergency calls for water main breaks, sewer backups, and other utility issues.
  • Help ensure compliance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) standards and safety procedures.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Set up traffic control devices and follow safety protocols for work zones.
  • Complete work orders, logs, and reports promptly and accurately.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment and City vehicle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support City operations.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as needed.
