About The Position

Utility Maintenance Mechanic 1: SUMMARY Mechanics are essential personnel for the maintenance and replacement of crucial equipment at various water and wastewater facilities. The job of the mechanic encompasses a wide range of skills and knowledge of motors, tools, supplies, and related machinery. The Mechanic I is an entry level mechanic position that performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks under the supervision of a Mechanic II or Mechanic III . A candidate for this position should possess basic to moderate aptitude. In addition, duties include, but are not limited to a variety of operations involving the inspection, diagnosis, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair and servicing of water and wastewater equipment, components, facilities and machinery. Class I Mechanics may reasonably expect to progress to class II level with training, experience, and continued demonstration of satisfactory job performance. A candidate for this position should possess an advanced to specialist aptitude. Incumbents at this level typically perform the more difficult and complex types of duties and provide lead supervision over assigned personnel. The Mechanic II is responsible for the maintenance of water well fields; pump stations, treatment facilities, and systems associated with production, transmission and treatment. Directly supervises class I Utility Maintenance Mechanics and Utility Workers. Implements and insures use of safety programs and safety equipment. Class II Mechanics may reasonably expect to progress to the Mechanic III level with training, experience, and continued demonstration of satisfactory job performance. Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • May be required to obtain a Water or Wastewater license issued by TCEQ
  • Minimum of two years of experience in the water utility maintenance field.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in the water utility maintenance field.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass a respirator medical evaluation and subsequent annual respirator medical evaluation and conform to all requirements of the respirator qualifications fit testing which includes no facial hair on the jaws and chin.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of relevant maintenance experience preferred.
  • One year of experience in the maintenance and repair of water treatment, water distribution and wastewater treatment systems preferred.
  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
  • A welding certification preferred.
  • A BPAT license and CSI license issued by TCEQ are preferred
  • Degree in Industrial Maintenance preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a supervisory role is preferred.
  • A welding certification preferred.

  • Three years of experience in a supervisory role is preferred.
  • Degree in Industrial Maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assignments in the Preventative Maintenance Program
  • Conducts routine inspections on daily, weekly and monthly basis
  • Performs plumbing repair of various sizes and materials
  • Changing oil, greasing bearings, replacing / repairing pumps, valves, motors of various size, and belt press and blower maintenance at the wastewater treatment facilities, water treatment facility, pump stations, and well fields
  • Performs routine tool and supply inventories
  • Assists Utility Maintenance Mechanics II and III with the inspection / repair of pumps, motors, valves, and chemical feed equipment, and security fences
  • Performs other needed services and maintenance.
  • Operates equipment such as, skid steer, backhoe, forklift, and trucks hauling trailers
  • Follows written and oral instructions.
  • Assists in grounds maintenance such as, mowing, trimming, and painting in addition to building maintenance
  • Paints and applies preservative to piping, metal and mechanical equipment parts to prevent corrosion
  • Assists in the pulling and setting wells
  • Assists in replacing leaking water lines, valves, etc
  • Keeps accurate records of work performed including supplies used
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned and follows safety protocol
  • Performs maintenance to water wells, buildings, fences, pump stations, water transmission lines, chemical feed equipment and other appurtenances as directed by the Chief Mechanic/ Field Maintenance Supervisor
  • Assists electricians in minor repairs
  • Duties include planning maintenance schedules for the water well fields and associated pump stations and water / wastewater treatment facilities
  • Assigns daily work schedule to subordinate personnel to allocate resources to accomplish tasks required and makes routine inspections of assigned work to ensure that it is completed in accordance with established standards
  • Maintains well rig and work zone surrounding rig
  • Inspect, diagnose and perform major and minor repair work on motors, pumps, hydraulic equipment, compressors, controls, valves and related equipment
  • Coordinates with the Field Maintenance Supervisor when wells are being repaired and out of service for extended periods of time
  • Assists the Chief Mechanic/Field Maintenance Supervisor with maintaining proper repair parts inventory and chemical storage for the pump stations
  • Assists the Utilities Maintenance Mechanic III in scheduling major repair projects
  • Assists and inspects the work done by the Utility Maintenance Mechanics I and II in the well fields, pump stations, and treatment plants Maintains well performance records, service records, and oversees preventative maintenance programs
  • Assists in writing specifications and requisitions for improvements and repair projects
  • Inspects work and keep records on projects performed by contractors and city crews
  • Works overtime and responds to callbacks by phone as required by workload or emergencies
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
  • Provides technical expertise in troubleshooting, repair & technician training
  • Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all designated mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors
  • Assists and inspects the work done by the Utility Maintenance Mechanics I in the well fields and pump stations
