About The Position

Rutgers University is seeking a Utility Locator for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). This position is crucial for ensuring compliance with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) regulations regarding the locating and marking of underground utilities. The Utility Locator will work independently under the supervision of the Utilities Project Manager and will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include placing markout requests before any excavation work, assisting the Survey/GIS crew in updating utility maps, and performing preventive maintenance inspections of the gas distribution system owned by Rutgers. The selected candidate will also be responsible for responding to emergency markouts, which may occur during nights, weekends, and holidays. This role requires effective communication with contractors and other utility owners to understand proposed work within Rutgers properties. Additionally, the Utility Locator will conduct inventory of markout materials, detect faulty operations of locating equipment, and provide guidance to markout trainees. The position demands a proactive approach to ensure that all utility systems are accurately represented in the utility maps and that all markout requests are handled efficiently. The Utility Locator will be expected to work across multiple campuses, including New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden, and must be prepared to work after hours as needed. This role is essential for maintaining the integrity and safety of underground utility operations at Rutgers University, ensuring that all work complies with state regulations and university policies.
