About The Position

The Utility Locator will be responsible for pinpointing the paths of underground utilities including pipes, conduit and cable. The utilities will be documented by marking and taking photos of the painted path or by capturing the coordinates using a surveying satellite in conjunction with the locating equipment.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings (motor vehicle, drug, and background)
  • Must work safely and follow all OSHA, and other Federal, State, and local safety regulations and company safety rules and procedures
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straightforward, and professional manner
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including, but not limited to: lifting objects weighing over 60 pounds
  • Ability to perform job activities outdoors in different weather conditions (e. g. , extreme cold and/or heat, inclement weather)
  • Ability to communicate with employees, contractors, and pedestrians in person in a clear, straight-forward, and professional manner
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and decision making
  • Reporting and prioritizing workloads
  • Maintaining organized and accurate records
  • Bend/squat/kneel/stand frequently
  • Planning and acquiring supply needs

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of previous experience in utility locating including: water, gas, telecommunications, power as well as the ability to read any and all prints to accurately mark utilities.
  • Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments, vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Locates underground utility lines
  • Uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
  • Utilizes stakes, flags, and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities.
  • Prepares various reports, forms, and memos to document work completed, and problems encountered and/or resolved.
  • Verifies field’s information and notifies the designated City departments regarding updates and corrections.
  • Operates and maintains mechanical and electronic equipment
  • Works safely, follows safe work practices, and identifies and reports unsafe work conditions.
  • On call shifts may be required at times rotating with other team members
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
