Utility Location Technician
About The Position
Performs field utility locations of subsurface water and wastewater utilities for the Miss Utility Program in accordance with state law; Attends regular meetings of the Miss Utility organization; Assists Engineering Staff in the building permit review process by performing field investigations, as necessary; Utilizes GIS software and record drawings to assist in Miss Utility locating; Performs difficult skilled and technical work in support of the water and sewer engineering program. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Senior Civil Engineer and the general supervision of the Director of Engineering or technical staff as assigned.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of the proper care and accurate use of field utility locating equipment, utilization of GIS in field utility locations, including submitting revisions through Cityworks to correct electronic map data, safety regulations and laws pertaining to the construction industry and water and wastewater industry specifically.
- Must have a general knowledge of Miss Utility laws, standard engineering construction and maintenance practices, water and wastewater drafting and surveying, and VDOT regulations and requirements.
- Ability to draw, read and interpret maps, utility construction drawings and specifications; reduce, interpret, and apply field notes; understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and sketches; serve on a survey party over varying rural and urban terrain, and work safely in high traffic areas.
- Requires possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and Confined Space Entry Training.
Responsibilities
- Review GIS and as-built drawings in preparation to field verify and mark location of water and sewer utilities
- Paint and/or flag utility locations in accordance with the transmitted Miss Utility tickets, as assigned by Sr. Utility Location Technician, using appropriate marking symbols
- Meet with contractors to provide information regarding possible conflicts prior to excavation
- Attend local utility damage prevention meetings and quarterly meetings of the Miss Utility organization
- Record location tickets, as assigned by the Sr. Utility Location Technician, in the Miss Utility database (Exactix) and verify the close-out of each ticket using appropriate code
- Provide backup to Sr. Utility Location Technician in accounting for all Miss Utility tickets and distributing to appropriate Construction Inspectors
- Locate and measure utility easements as necessary to field verify proposed structures will not encroach into the easements
- Verify the proper disconnection of service lines prior to approval of demolition permits
- Provide Quality Assurance/Quality Control for GIS based upon field verification of utility locations
- Submit Cityworks Edit GIS Work Orders to correct missing or inaccurate information.
