The purpose of this classification is to correctly locate, identify and mark underground utility, gas, and water lines. The position involves locating, identifying, and marking underground utility, gas, and water lines/mains. The employee will read, analyze, interpret, and draft plans and maps, as well as organize daily ticket routing to achieve maximum efficiency, reviewing tickets before and after all locates. The role requires operating a department vehicle safely and lawfully, maintaining and storing records of locates for the appropriate span of time, and identifying and reporting faulty leaks to appropriate staff. Additionally, the employee will operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools including a pipe horn and cable locator, metal detector/locator, shovel, probe rod, sledge hammer, striping machine/equipment, level survey rod, computer, fax machine, calculator, etc. General maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition will also be performed, including inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas. The employee will prepare and/or complete various forms, correspondence, reports, work sheets, timesheets, and other documents, and will communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio, providing information, taking and relaying messages, and responding to requests for service. The position also involves responding to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public, or other individuals, and providing emergency assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed. Other related duties may be required as necessary.
