About The Position

The Utility Line Locate Technician performs duties related to the construction and maintenance of public works projects, utilities, and infrastructure. Responds to 811 requests, ensuring the safety of our infrastructure during excavation and construction. This position is authorized to operate a city vehicle and is considered a safety-sensitive position. Specific Duties: Uses electronic locating equipment, GIS, and maps to identify underground utilities (electric, gas, water, sewer, telecom) in roadways, easements, and private property. Marks lines accurately with APWA-compliant spray paint and flags to prevent damage during excavation and construction, complying with safety regulations. Read and interpret complex engineering plans, utility maps, and site drawings to locate lines. Use technology to receive, document, and close out locate requests (tickets) in the field. Perform, at times, minor hand-digging or probing to verify the exact location of buried utilities. Coordinate with contractors, excavators, and homeowners to discuss projects and if necessary, provide responses to one-call agencies. Maintain, calibrate, and operate locating tools and ensure vehicle safety. Assists GIS Project Manager with locating specified landmarks/utilities for mapping purposes. Participates in the work of crews performing manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in public works projects, utility projects, parks and ground maintenance. Ability to work alone and independently, without direct supervision. Works outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions, and traverses rough terrain. Walk for extended periods and stand for long durations. Performs other duties as required.
