About The Position

Under direction, the Utility Inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance of city rules and regulations and inspecting job sites for general safety in the work zone.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid general construction work or experience in a related field.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
  • Working ability to prepare clear and concise reports, to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to maintain harmonious relationships with co-workers, vendors, and members of the public.
  • Ability to identify, plan, and prioritize job responsibilities and tasks, and determine and implement project timelines.
  • Ability to create spreadsheets; google docs.
  • Ability to use a handheld tablet device.
  • BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous construction inspection/utility work preferred.
  • OSHA training preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.

Responsibilities

  • Checks slips, making sure contractors use an approved vendor from the city of Boston.
  • Verifies work site is Covid-19 plan compliant.
  • Ensures backfills and paving are supplied with cones and barriers for safety. Inspects patches after completion.
  • Measures and records in tablet patch information less than 100 feet.
  • Records patch locations and names of contractors; records information of lists of all job permits and all plate locations in a handheld tablet.
  • Records bad patches and bad castings in tablet.
  • Inspects sidewalks, ensuring rules and regulations are met and are A.D.A. compliant.
  • Re-inspects bad patches and casting, ensuring the utility or private contractor has satisfactorily completed work. Closes out permits.
  • Inspects CRMs in their assigned districts.
  • Performs 90-day inspections after work by vendors and private companies has been completed.
  • Inspects and updates plate listings for current and accurate information, which is posted to the Public Works Department website. This is very important during snow months to ensure safety.
  • Inspects polling locations to make sure work is not within 500 feet of polling locations on voting days.
  • Assigns districts in tablet for new permits not previously listed or inadvertently listed.
  • Inspects guaranteed streets under different contracts.
  • Routinely works on finalizing lists for permits in the system. Creates spreadsheet of outstanding permits.
  • Inspects Special Events routes, i.e. Marathon/Parade/Road Race) for easy access and safety.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Required to work any and all emergencies are directed by the Chief of Streets or designee.
