About The Position

To perform and often lead other staff in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled activities regarding the repair and maintenance of commercial and residential water services and distribution system for the City; to troubleshoot, analyze and resolve problem situations; and to perform various related duties as required. SUPERVISION General supervision is provided by the Utility Supervisor.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.
One year of responsible experience involving the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution, collection systems or meter services.
When assigned to Water Distribution, Reconstruction or Wastewater Collection: Possession of a valid driver's license.
Possession of a valid Class A Texas driver's license or obtain a Class A commercial driver's license within 90 days of employment. Failure to obtain a Class A driver's license within 90 days of employment will result in non-disciplinary termination.
When assigned to Water, obtain Class "C" Distribution certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one year of successful completion of probationary period, if hired after January 1, 2003.
When assigned to Wastewater Collection, obtain Class "II" Wastewater certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one year of successful completion of probationary period, if hired after January 1, 2003.
Failure to obtain certifications will result in non-disciplinary termination.
When assigned to Meter Services: Possession of a valid Class C Texas driver's license.
Obtain Class "C" Distribution certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one year of employment, if hired after January 1, 2003.
Failure to obtain certification will result in non-disciplinary termination.

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled activities in the repair and maintenance of water distribution, wastewater collection and meter services.
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures.
Troubleshoot problem situations related to utilities activities; analyze and assess problem areas; resolve situations in an efficient and timely manner.
Assist utility crews and contractors in water shut downs and repair projects; participate in the location of water main lines and valves.
Participate in the installation and repair of water distribution lines, wastewater collection lines and meters.
Deal with outside contractors on utilities projects.
Work with City inspectors and contractors; participate in solving various utilities inspection problems as needed.
Operate a variety of tools and equipment including trucks, backhoes, ditch witches, water pumps, air compressors, pipe locators, cutting torches and saws; perform general maintenance duties including refueling, changing oil and lubricating parts; make minor adjustments as necessary.
Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
Remain on-call to respond to emergency situations for repair of utilities systems and various related problems; may be required to work all shifts.
Maintain records related to water utility operations and maintenance; prepare logs for daily projects.
May collect meter readings; prepare meter tickets as necessary.
Verify operation of and read commercial and residential meters; test meters for accuracy; replace obsolete meters as necessary.
Install and maintain meters and related equipment as requested.
Connect and disconnect utilities for new and terminated customers.
Enter and verify data pertaining to the computer system including contractor deposits, commercial and City meters and meter numbers, meter reading totals, issued meters, replaced meter parts, accuracy tests, new customers and account auditing; may prepare special computer projects as assigned.
Prepare and distribute work orders for meter readings including new and revised accounts, meter maintenance, leakage and the termination of water service for delinquent accounts; dispatch work orders, service calls and emergency calls to drivers; prepare an accurate count of service calls as requested; update location of service employees as assigned.
Ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
When assigned to Wastewater - will work night or weekend shift.
May provide functional and technical supervision.
Ensure safety standards are met; note possible safety hazards or causes of injury.
Requisition maintenance supplies, materials and equipment; transport supplies and parts to water crews.
Fill in for supervisor when not present.
Collect and prepare meter materials for work orders including placing corresponding work order numbers on collected supplies.
Participate in and assist with testing and repair of computerized meter readers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
