About The Position

The Utilities Plant Operator - Water Treatment position involves performing intermediate skilled trades work to assist mechanics in maintaining water treatment operations. The role is crucial for ensuring the proper functioning of the water treatment plant and its associated equipment. The operator will work under the limited supervision of the Senior Utilities Plant Operator and will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall efficiency and safety of the water treatment process. Key responsibilities include making regular tours of the plant to check on engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, and other equipment to ensure they are functioning correctly. The operator will also be required to record readings from meters and instruments, perform specific laboratory tests, and report any defects to maintenance personnel. In the absence of the senior operator, the Utilities Plant Operator will substitute and take on their responsibilities, which may include monitoring water plant operations and distribution via SCADA and adjusting chemical dosages under the senior operator's direction. To be successful in this role, the operator must possess a thorough knowledge of industry standards, departmental policies, and legal guidelines. They should also have the ability to perform arithmetic computations and establish effective working relationships with colleagues and the public. The position requires a high school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Physical requirements include the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and to perform various physical activities such as standing, walking, climbing, and balancing. The work environment may expose the operator to toxic or caustic chemicals, loud noise, and other hazardous conditions, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.
