About The Position

Skilled work in the maintenance, fabrication and repair of mechanical equipment related to the supply, transmission and treatment of potable water and wastewater.

Requirements

  • Must have the physical, developmental and mental ability to perform job tasks, work efforts, responsibilities and duties of the job illustrated below
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of electrical motors and pumps.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of mechanical and valve equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades.
  • Ability to make inspections to determine operating conditions and needed repairs of plant machinery and pumping equipment.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, pencil sketches or written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in the use of mechanic's tools and shop equipment in the installation, repair and maintenance of treatment plant equipment.
  • Ability and agility to perform various job duties in all weather conditions including lifting and/or interacting with job related appurtenances and equipment which may weigh more than seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Ability to see colors.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination.
  • Ability to see, ambulate independently, drive, climb, bend, stoop, sit, and stand.
  • Ability to make independent decisions.
  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of three (3) years experience in industrial plant maintenance mechanic work including some welding experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment in this classification.
  • Must have home telephone at the time of employment as employee is subject to standby and/or call out for emergencies.
  • This position shall be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, overhauls, repairs, maintains and services equipment such as, but not limited to, pumps, motors, chemical feeders, gas and diesel engines, compressors, blowers, controls including alternators, regulators, etc., meters, gauges, gear reduction equipment, heat exchangers and mixing and collecting devices and all relative equipment as determined by supervisor.
  • Performs oxygen acetylene and electric welding, brazing, soldering and painting.
  • Instructs other mechanics and helpers in the repair of plant and related equipment.
  • Checks and adjusts equipment.
  • Maintains service records.
  • Submits requests for new parts and equipment.
  • Performs related duties as required.
