About The Position

As a Utilities Data Analyst, you’ll provide leadership at both strategic and operational levels in energy planning, invoice auditing, and process improvement. This position requires the regular use of independent judgment and discretion, particularly when evaluating complex data, interpreting ambiguous information, and determining corrective actions. Your work will primarily involve utility invoice analysis and auditing, locating and resolving errors, and identifying cost saving opportunities. You will synthesize energy information across electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, mall utilities, water, and steam to support Finance and business partners. The ability to interpret data to formulate recommendations, troubleshoot issues, and communicate insights is essential. Familiarity with national climate patterns and their impact on energy usage, along with a basic understanding of building systems, will enhance your effectiveness in this analytical role. Adaptability, urgency, and collaboration are key.

Requirements

  • Data Management: Understanding budgets, financial commitments, and cost saving initiatives; ability to identify process improvements.
  • Analytical Judgment: Ability to exercise independent discretion when evaluating ambiguous or conflicting data.
  • Problem Solving: Skilled at identifying root causes by integrating data, climate considerations, and building related factors.
  • Advanced Excel: Proficient with pivot tables, VLOOKUP, INDEX MATCH, advanced formulas, and macros to automate and optimize workflows.
  • Coordination: Strong collaborator across internal and external stakeholders; able to drive alignment and execution.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to drive initiatives, enhance operations, and align analysis with organizational goals.
  • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication; able to present insights to partners at all levels.
  • Workflow Management: Skilled at prioritizing tasks, managing deadlines, and ensuring timely project completion.
  • Collaboration: Effective in working cross functionally to support business needs.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field encouraged.
  • Effective written and verbal communicator; able to draft reports, present insights, and interpret technical materials such as safety rules, operating instructions, or procedure manuals.
  • Demonstrates strong independent judgment, particularly when evaluating data, identifying discrepancies, and determining the best course of action.
  • Capable of interpreting technical information and synthesizing it into clear conclusions and recommendations.
  • Thrives working with data and recognizes the importance of accuracy and consistency. Able to spot patterns, trends, and anomalies across large datasets.
  • Understands national climate trends and how they influence utility usage.
  • Possesses basic working knowledge of building systems (e.g., HVAC, mechanical, operational behaviors) to support troubleshooting and analysis.
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to define issues, gather facts, analyze variables, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Comfortable processing complex instructions and solving problems involving abstract and concrete variables.
  • Physical requirements may include constant movement, standing, reaching, lifting up to 30 lbs, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, and visual acuity needs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct utility bill analysis and energy data vetting.
  • Identify and resolve data errors and overbillings for electric, water, gas, steam, oil, etc., working directly with hundreds of utility vendors.
  • Provide granular, accurate, and cleaned energy data to Finance for budgeting and ROF processes.
  • Analyze trends, identify causes of overages, and uncover opportunities for savings.
  • Interpret complex datasets to formulate recommendations and troubleshoot root causes.
  • Apply independent discretion when determining next steps for billing disputes or unusual consumption patterns.
  • Incorporate national climate considerations when explaining trends, anomalies, or seasonal variances.
  • Leverage basic knowledge of building systems to contextualize consumption irregularities and support root cause analysis.
  • Assist with all utility and energy service provider issues.
  • Work collaboratively with Facilities Management, Corporate Accounting, and Stores Finance partners to maximize results.
  • Provide analytical support and insights to business partners as needed.
  • Create ad hoc reports and analyses.
  • Demonstrate regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Communicate professionally with business partners at all levels.
