About The Position

The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve (GSLSP) Assistant performs and participates in preserve operations and maintenance, under the direction of the GSLSP Manager and Utah Director of Stewardship. The funding and/or need for this position is expected to last for approximately six months with an intended start-date in late May or early June and an end date in early- to mid-October. This is a part-time, hourly position expected to work approximately 4 hours per day, 4 days per week. The GSLSP Assistant removes exotic species, maintains/builds fence, and maintains tools and equipment while stewarding the land. They should be familiar with various type of equipment, including but not limited to chainsaws, tractors, trailers and ATVs and be familiar with herbicide equipment/handling at the following Preserves: The 4,540-acre Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, owned and managed by TNC. The 2,098-acre Legacy Nature Preserve, owned and managed by TNC. The 616-acre South Shore Reserve, owned and managed by TNC. The 3,670-acre Inland Sea Shorebird Reserve, owned by Rio Tinto Kennecott and managed by TNC.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in land management or equivalent combination.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., tractor, excavator, chainsaw, UTV, ATV, OHV, or similar equipment).

Nice To Haves

  • 1 - 2 years' experience in land management or related field.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications, as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
