POSITION OVERVIEW As an Upper School English Teacher at Westminster, you will work alongside 130+ talented colleagues in a vibrant and collegial academic setting. Supervisor : Head of Upper School Supervisory Responsibilities : None Position Status : Salaried, Exempt, Full-time, 10-month Work Hours : Typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekend and evening work may be required.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or a closely related field is required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching English at the upper school or secondary level is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering a rigorous and engaging classroom environment is desirable.
  • Strong content knowledge in literature, writing, grammar, and critical analysis.
  • Familiarity with various instructional approaches and the ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
  • Ability to design and implement assessments that measure student understanding and support growth.
  • Dedication to the academic, social, and emotional development of adolescents.
  • Proven ability to build positive, respectful relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Competence in integrating educational technology into classroom instruction.
  • Willingness to use digital platforms for communication, assessment, and collaboration.
  • Willingness to share ideas and materials as part of a collaborative work culture
  • Willingness to engage fully in the life of the Upper School, including participation in departmental work, professional development, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a collegial and mission-driven environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and character education in a school community.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s or other advanced degree in English or education is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches four (4) sections of English
  • Works directly with 18 Upper School English teachers as part of an English PLC to develop curriculum and assessments
  • Co-teaches a 3-week immersive, interdisciplinary class during JanTerm
  • Advises students as part of the Upper School Advisory Program
  • Provides regular assistance to students in the Upper School Writing Center and covers classes for colleagues when needed
  • Contributes to the larger school community through coaching or sponsoring other extracurricular programs.
  • Depending on the candidate's expertise, responsibilities may include working with student publications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
