About The Position

Under general supervision, this internship will support the City of Arlington’s Forestry & Beautification (FAB) division in a variety of operational, field-based, and project-focused assignments. The intern will assist in maintaining Arlington’s urban forest, beautification of medians and rights-of-way, and park landscapes while developing professional skills, networking with industry professionals, and gaining a deeper understanding of urban forestry and environmental stewardship in a local government setting. This is a competitive 16-week, part-time internship (20 hours/week, Monday - Thursday) jointly offered by the University of Texas at Arlington and the City of Arlington. This program provided immersive, hands-on experience in municipal government operations, fostering professional development through real-world projects and exposure.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of urban forestry, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with City staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork in outdoor environments, including various weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (PC, telephone, scanner, copier) and field tools (tree measurement instruments, hand tools).
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision.
  • Currently enrolled at a Texas College and majoring in Forestry, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
  • High school diploma or GED required, plus at least one year of college coursework or related experience.
  • Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience in forestry, arboriculture, landscape design, or environmental management.
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping, tree inventory software, or other data management tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with tree inventory updates, including collecting and entering field data.
  • Analyze urban forestry data to support management decisions.
  • Participate in tree planting, structural pruning, and landscape maintenance activities.
  • Assist with the supervision of volunteer groups for forestry-related projects.
  • Conduct research on best practices for urban forestry, landscaping, and beautification.
  • Support public outreach and educational initiatives related to tree care and environmental stewardship.
  • Operate a city vehicle to perform fieldwork at various sites.
  • Attend program-required orientation, check-ins, and Lunch & Learn sessions.
  • Provide feedback through 30%, 60%, and 90% program evaluations.
  • Perform other forestry, beautification, or administrative tasks as assigned.
