About The Position

UNH TRIO Upward Bound, a federally funded college preparatory program, provides services at no cost to 114 students attending public high schools in Farmington, Manchester, Rochester, and Somersworth NH. Participants in the program will be the first in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree and/or come from a family with limited financial resources. Our mission is to help students develop the skills necessary to successfully graduate from high school and go on to college in order to earn a two or four-year degree within six-years of high school graduation. The Upward Bound Summer Bridge Program provides recent high school graduates of UNH TRIO Upward Bound with a two-week residential experience to help them prepare prior to embarking on their college journey in the fall. Programming at Upward Bound Summer Bridge We offer pre-college non-credit classes workshops in Residential Life, Health & Wellness, Academic Support & Preparedness, group communication as well as Success Seminars (in “life after high school” topics). UB teachers are committed to education and to helping young people to have the opportunity to create an experiential curriculum that is both interesting and inspiring. Our Tackling World Problems Seminar is a class designed to help students learn to think and write critically & creatively at a college level. You will assess problems, conduct research & apply your knowledge & energy into a self-designed project related to a world problem that you identify and then work to find creative & new solutions. The overarching class focus of TWP collaborative work will be Post Secondary Education access for all people. Students will also identify a world or community problem of interest to them to review and research to develop solutions. Our College to Career Seminar is designed to support students in thinking about career preparation during college. Activities include career exploration, review resumes & cover letters, networking and creating LinkedIn profiles, conducting mock-interviews, networking & informational interviews and video introductions for future job applications, as well as searching for internships and employment.

Requirements

  • Completion of an BS/BA program in relevant field.
  • Experience with workshop presentations & instruction.
  • Desire to help disadvantaged youth succeed.
  • Sensitivity and maturity level to successfully work in a summer academic program with high school aged students.
  • Experience with direct classroom instruction, preferably with high school students.
  • Ability to interact with diverse constituencies including program & UNH staff, parents/guardians, and students.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and protection of minors training.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in direct instruction of high school students.
  • Experience participating in a TRIO, or similar, pre-college program.
  • Experience working with students from low-income backgrounds, multi-ethnic backgrounds and/or who are potential first-generation college graduates.

Responsibilities

  • Teach eight, 90-minute classes for two weeks during the Summer Bridge Program from either 9:00-10:30 or 1:00-2:30 (depending on class and availability).
  • Students are taking courses in the summer that will help to prepare them for their transition to college in the fall. Therefore, curriculum designed is based on “what students need to know” to get a jump start on work study jobs, exploring majors, internships, etc.
  • We work with teachers to create an experiential curriculum that is both interesting and inspiring.
  • Write final student evaluations at the conclusion of the course
