About The Position

The High School Math Instructor will be responsible for teaching the following courses: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or Pre-calculus/Calculus. This position involves conducting an integrated academic math class and teaching students learning strategies. The instructor will prepare and submit a course outline prior to the start of the class and assist with the planning, instruction, and evaluation of tutoring and problem-solving activities. Additionally, the instructor will complete paperwork associated with classroom and project management, make recommendations on students' strengths and needs, and report student learning and behavioral issues to the appropriate staff personnel. The instructor is also required to assist with the training and evaluation of Teacher Assistants and attend training and meetings as necessary.

Requirements

  • Two or more years of teaching experience at the high school or post-secondary level.
  • Complete a background clearance check.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive instructional tutoring program for students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in the designated discipline.
  • Experience working with minority and disadvantaged students at the middle school, high school or post-secondary level.
  • At the university's discretion, equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct an integrated academic math class (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus/Calculus) and teach students learning strategies.
  • Conduct teaching and instructional activities using educational equipment, manipulative objects, props, and other learning aids.
  • Prepare and submit a course outline prior to the start of the class.
  • Assist with the planning, instruction, and evaluation of tutoring and problem-solving activities.
  • Complete paperwork associated with classroom and project management.
  • Make recommendations on students' strengths and needs.
  • Report student learning and behavioral issues to the appropriate staff personnel.
  • Assist with the training and evaluation of Teacher Assistants.
  • Attend training and meetings.
  • Provide 24-hour notice in the event of an absence.
  • Prepare classroom work for students and ensure the TA is prepared to deliver work in the instructor's absence.
  • Transport students from one class location to another, ensuring proper supervision and safety.
