About The Position

Harvard-Westlake School seeks an Upper School Academic Support Specialist to join the Learning Center for the 202627 school year. This full-time position, beginning in August 2026, supports students in grades 1012 in cultivating effective learning habits, strengthening academic skills, and fostering independence within a rigorous college-preparatory environment. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of learning differences, current and accepted brain research and methodologies, and evidence-based academic interventions. They are skilled in supporting students across the writing process and demonstrate cultural competency in their work with students, families, faculty, and other stakeholders. The Learning Center supports students with a wide range of learning profiles and works collaboratively with faculty, counselors, deans, and families to promote academic growth, self-advocacy, and independence. Members of the Learning Center team play a vital role in helping students build skills, confidence, and strategies that allow them to thrive in Harvard-Westlakes academically demanding environment.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of learning differences, current and accepted brain research and methodologies, and evidence-based interventions

  • A collaborative approach to working with classroom teachers, counselors, deans, and administrators
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with care and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to engage thoughtfully with students, families, faculty, staff, and outside professionals
  • High standards of confidentiality when handling sensitive student and family information
  • Masters degree in education, Board Certified Educational Therapist credential, valid teaching credential (mild/moderate disabilities), or related professional experience
  • Minimum of three years experience teaching or supporting students with diagnosed learning differences, or serving as a learning specialist with students in grades 1012
  • Strong understanding of evidence-based instructional practices that promote student independence, organization, and academic success
  • Ability to read and synthesize neuropsychological evaluations, Section 504 plans, and Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), and to develop formal education plans based on accommodations offered by Harvard-Westlake
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, administrators, and families to implement individualized learning plans

  • Familiarity with assistive technologies, neuroscience research, and differentiated instructional strategies

Responsibilities

  • Supporting a targeted caseload of students, with an emphasis on academic skill development and individualized learning strategies
  • Meeting one-on-one with students to strengthen executive functioning skills, including planning, organization, work completion, communication, and self-advocacy
  • Serving as a liaison between the Learning Center and the English Department, particularly in supporting students through the writing process
  • Designing and leading workshops for students on topics such as study skills, executive functioning, time management, and subject-specific academic strategies
  • Collaborating closely with faculty and administrators to advocate for students and partner with families around learning differences and individualized academic needs
  • Working with teachers to support differentiated instruction and foster a student-centered learning environment aligned with Harvard-Westlakes academic standards
