About The Position

Burke’s is seeking a French teacher for grades 5-8 who can educate, encourage, and empower girls by developing their knowledge, skills, and cultural/historical understanding of the French language and its impact on our world. With an emphasis on project-based learning and a commitment to anti-racist education, students should be able to connect their learning to the world around them with strong speaking, listening, reading, and writing skill sets. While serious in mission, Burke’s also sees the experience of learning as a joyful one where play, creativity, and growth mindsets are fostered and encouraged and go hand-in-hand with academic rigor. This role involves teaching four sections of French—one section in each grade level of the Upper School.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent, preferably in related field
  • Experience teaching French, preferably at middle-school level
  • Demonstrated confidence in: differentiation of instruction cultural competency project-based learning innovative use of technology in instruction
  • Commitment to: equitable and anti-racist teaching practices integrating community and civic engagement in learning modeling lifelong learning and professional growth by engaging with professional development opportunities
  • Understanding of, and appreciation for: the social-emotional development of adolescent girls providing opportunities for learning through play by inviting creativity, imagination, curiosity, and tinkering into the classroom

  • Ability to participate in outdoor education trips as additional chaperone. Physical demands include hiking 6-8 miles in a day, tent camping, and backpacking (~30lb) for 3-4 days.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching Upper School French; this includes: Formally assessing and reporting on student progress three times per year using checklist/narrative report cards
  • Providing extra-help sessions during and after the school day, as needed
  • Planning and supervising field trips relevant to curriculum
  • Effective communication with colleagues in support of a collegial and collaborative professional community
  • Timely and supportive communication with students, parents, and caregivers to foster a strong partnership with families
  • Participate in regular team meetings including to attending faculty and grade level meetings
  • Participate in Opening and Closing Meetings in August and June as well as professional development day three times each school year
  • Contribute to curriculum development and revision
  • Collaborate effectively with the Director of Curriculum and Innovation as well as then Upper School World Language team, especially with respect to differentiation
  • Supervisory duties as needed
  • Support outdoor education trips as additional chaperone. This can include tent camping and backpacking.

  • Burke’s offers competitive compensation with a salary range of $79,000 - $153,000 based on years of experience (2 – 50 years) plus advanced degree stipends. Both prorated for percent FTE.
