About The Position

Upham Woods is a residential center within the UW-Madison, Division of Extension located in pristine forests along the beautiful Wisconsin River, two miles north of Wisconsin Dells. Upham Woods provides hands-on, field-based education and recreation opportunities to youth, youth leaders, and adults through programs focused on environmental and leadership education. The Center, officially accredited through the American Camp Association (ACA), consists of 14 buildings including a new welcome center, full-service kitchen and dining hall, nature center, and lodging for visitors and seasonal staff. The Center sits on the Wisconsin River with over 300 acres of forested land, including a 210-acre state natural area island. This position joins a highly collaborative team of educators passionate about connecting youth and adults to positive outdoor learning experiences with the goal of developing future stewards of Wisconsin's natural resources.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma
  • Be able to read and follow work instructions and schedules, warning signs and instructions for equipment operations.
  • Have basic knowledge and ability to recognize and implement safety procedures as required, including precautions in use of caustic and toxic chemicals, methods of lifting heavy objects and wearing of safe work clothing.
  • Have physical strength and stamina to perform required work - including ability to bend, stoop, kneel, move furniture and work on feet for long periods of time.
  • Be able to properly lift 30 pounds repeatedly and more with help.
  • Must be courteous with staff, clients and the public.
  • Ability to work well alone and with others during unsupervised periods.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to identify priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervision and as part of a team.
  • Reliable means of transportation to and from work.

Nice To Haves

  • Know proper methods, cleaning agents, and equipment for janitorial work.
  • Be able to properly mix cleaning fluids according to mathematical ratios.
  • Experience with groundskeeping equipment - mowers, string trimmers, etc.
  • Driver's License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans facilities, removes waste and recycling, and monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours.
  • Ensures cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in assigned areas.
  • Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables.
  • Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities.
  • Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs.
  • Maintaining program equipment such as fishing and archery equipment within their ability.
  • Assists with grounds keeping such as mowing, leaf blowing, weeding or other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Compensatory time for hours worked is preferred, however, overtime may be an option based on budget and workload.
