About The Position

The Unlicensed Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the tugboat/vessel, overseeing all aspects of navigation, vessel management, and crew leadership. This position ensures compliance with maritime regulations and company policies, providing clear directions for day-to-day operations. In addition to commanding the vessel, the Unlicensed Captain is accountable for the safety of the crew, passengers (if applicable), and cargo, as well as maintaining the vessel’s condition and readiness for operations. The position works closely with the operations team to ensure that logistical, operational, and safety objectives are met in a timely and effective manner.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One (1) year of Captain experience required.
  • Technical knowledge of various Marine concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of all Marine state and federal regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge with utilizing navigation aids such as charts, radar, AIS, depth finder, compass, and GPS.
  • Specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and currents.
  • Ability to comply with and enforce standard policies and procedures.
  • Ability to direct and supervise crew members.
  • Strong personnel management skills and ability to enforce Federal, State, and company labor and employment regulations.
  • Supervisory skills, including but limited to, effectively and constructively resolving conflict
  • Ability to provide leadership, counsel, motivation, and administer constructive performance reviews to crew members.
  • Ability to do business ethically with customers, vendors, and co-workers.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure, meeting deadlines and adjusting work schedule to meet goals.
  • Ability to create, read, and understand complex documents, construction plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule often including weekends and holidays.
  • Valid driver’s license record and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company’s Driving Polices.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screenings.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of Western Alaska Tug experience preferred.
  • Current Coast Guard MMC as Master of Towing Vessels with an Unlimited Radar Observer endorsement, AB, Medical Certificate, HAZMAT with refresher every 3 years preferred.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a Coast Guard physical exam for merchant mariners preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the job in a safe and seamanlike manner in accordance with all company policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Supervise the vessel crew daily, conduct yearly performance evaluations, and process disciplinary procedures.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, safety, and welfare of the crew, equipment, and cargo.
  • Maintain communication with appropriate company offices to inform them of changes in schedule, customer information, arrival and departure times, and any accidents, injuries, or environmental issues.
  • Responsible for completing all company paperwork, including but not limited to logs, VGP, payroll, safety meetings, drills, telephone usage, fuel consumption, and vessel and barge condition reports.
  • Ensure that charts, navigational aids, safety manuals, vessel operations plans, and barge and tug documents are on board the tug, readily available, and up to date.
  • Act as the company representative in the field with customers and regulatory agents by company policy.
  • Responsible for implementing and observing the company's safety and environmental plans.
  • Ensure that all employees follow all company procedures as required by the appropriate agencies, both state and federal.
  • Determine channel selection and towing speed based on specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and currents.
  • Navigate the tug-barge combination to its destination while avoiding reefs, outlying shoals, and other hazards to shipping, utilizing navigation aids such as charts, radar, AIS, depth finder, compass, and GPS.
  • Oversee docking and undocking evolutions.
  • Direct loading and unloading at destinations, including but not limited to landing selection, line placement, ramp placement, and lighting as appropriate.
  • Ensure that the correct cargo is loaded and unloaded safely.
  • Oversee and approve the lashing of cargo.
  • Observe, comply, and enforce all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
