About The Position

The University Police Officer position is regulated by the Massachusetts Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and is appointed as sworn police officers under Massachusetts General Laws. The role involves patrolling assigned areas of the University of Massachusetts to ensure a safe environment for the community, adhering to federal, state, and local laws, as well as university policies. Candidates must have completed a Massachusetts Basic Police Training Program or equivalent training to qualify for the position. The appointee will undergo a probationary period of twelve months upon reporting for duty.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Massachusetts Basic Police Training Program from an accredited police academy or equivalent training.
  • Participation in a 10-week in-house post-academy field training program upon appointment.
  • Prior police experience may require passing a Physical Agility Test (PAT) and a psychological evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Support the University of Massachusetts Boston Police Department mission and policies.
  • Exercise police powers in the detection and apprehension of law violators; investigate crimes, accidents, and complaints.
  • Patrol buildings and lands of the University to protect persons and property.
  • Create and maintain a sense of safety and security within the University and adjacent areas.
  • Assist in traffic control and enforce State motor vehicle laws and University regulations.
  • Maintain order at special events and conduct investigations as necessary.
  • Conduct accident and crime investigations and prepare detailed reports.
  • Provide public assistance including lockout services, escorts, first aid, and vehicle jump-starts.
  • Represent the department at community engagement events and meetings.
  • Demonstrate or acquire specialized law enforcement skills and participate in community crime prevention programs.
  • Serve as Campus Security Authority and be familiar with federal mandates related to campus safety.
  • Respond immediately to emergencies and perform emergency first aid and CPR as needed.
