About The Position

The University Police Officer 1 at SUNY Buffalo State is responsible for enforcing New York State and local laws, as well as the Student Code of Conduct on campus. This role involves a full range of police duties, including patrolling, responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, and engaging with the campus community to promote safety and crime prevention. Officers are expected to maintain order, assist in investigations, and provide educational programs related to personal safety and crime awareness.

Requirements

  • Must be reachable on the New York State Civil Service University Police Officer 1 list or be eligible for lateral transfer.
  • Meet established physical and medical requirements for appointment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted New York State motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Legally eligible to carry a firearm and complete all certification requirements as a police officer in New York State.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce New York State and local laws and the Student Code of Conduct on campus.
  • Patrol assigned areas on foot, bicycle, motor scooter, or vehicle to deter criminal activity.
  • Respond to calls for assistance and emergencies, ensuring the protection of persons and property.
  • Conduct initial investigations of incidents, gather evidence, and interview witnesses.
  • Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic, enforce vehicle and traffic laws, and direct traffic during peak periods.
  • Control crowds at events and ensure safety at gatherings.
  • Serve as Desk Officer, receiving and interpreting communications and dispatching officers as needed.
  • Prepare shift summary reports and logs covering activities of a criminal or unusual nature.
  • Deliver in-service training and community educational programs on safety and crime prevention.
