About The Position

The University of Alabama System (UA System) is seeking applications for the position of University Counsel. This on-site role is based in Birmingham on the campus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Reporting to the Deputy Chief University Counsel – Business and Advising, the University Counsel will provide a broad range of legal services and strategic advice to UAB and its affiliated entities. About the UA System The UA System is Alabama's largest higher education enterprise, comprising three research universities - The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville - along with the UAB Health System and numerous affiliated entities. Collectively, the UA System provides educational services to more than 71,500 students while supporting a workforce of over 67,000.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success in effectively serving a broad, diverse, and demanding clientele
  • Excellent legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in working cohesively on team projects
  • Established ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant legal experience

Responsibilities

  • Advise on a wide range of higher education and health care legal matters, including managed care contracting, regulatory compliance, business transactions, and privacy law
  • Provide responsive and strategic legal support to a diverse group of UAB stakeholders, navigating complex issues with professionalism, clarity, and expertise
  • Other duties as assigned
