About The Position

The University Assistant Fire Marshal plays a crucial role in overseeing compliance with the Arizona State Fire Code for construction and renovation projects at the University of Arizona. This position involves reviewing fire and life safety plans, issuing permits, and ensuring that all projects meet regulatory standards. The Assistant Fire Marshal will supervise the Permit Technician and Fire Inspectors, ensuring that fire safety regulations are adhered to, thereby supporting the university's research and operational priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Plan Review Certification from ICC or NFPA.
  • Working knowledge of adopted building and fire codes.
  • Knowledge of building permit and plan review processes.
  • Computer skills commensurate with digital platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years experience in fire and building construction plan review using adopted fire and building codes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed evaluations of construction and renovation plans to ensure adherence to the Arizona State Fire Code and ICC/NFPA standards.
  • Analyze plans to identify fire and life safety issues, provide corrective feedback to Project Managers, and provide guidance in resolving deficiencies.
  • Independently assess complex documents, make informed recommendations, and communicate necessary changes without direct supervision.
  • Ensure timely and efficient issuance of permits to facilitate project initiation while adhering to regulatory deadlines.
  • Oversee the accurate calculation, approval, and documentation of project fees, ensuring financial transactions are recorded accurately.
  • Strategically manage the permit issuance process and fee approvals, optimizing workflow to meet project timelines.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records, ensuring all documentation is up-to-date and readily accessible for compliance verification.
  • Prepare for and contribute to planning meetings, offering expert insights and answering questions based on thorough knowledge of fire and life safety codes.
  • Collaborate with university project managers, architects, engineers, leaders, and contractors to ensure accurate understanding and application of adopted codes and university standards for fire and life safety.
  • Facilitate effective communication and provide guidance to peers on the correct interpretation of fire and life safety codes and university design standards.
  • Ensure continuous professional development and up-to-date expertise in fire and life safety systems, codes, and construction practices.
