About The Position

Join the United Way of Southern Nevada as a (PART-TIME, applicants must be able to work from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. This is a part-time position that provides work from the beginning of March 2026 to the end of May 2026) United Readers Mentor and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of literacy while impacting young minds! What would you do as a United Readers Mentors As a United Readers Mentor, you'll begin each day by preparing engaging reading activities tailored to the interests and reading levels of your students. You'll lead interactive sessions that promote literacy and comprehension, fostering a warm and encouraging environment. Your responsibilities will include assessing students' progress, providing personalized feedback, and motivating them to set and achieve reading goals. Collaboration is key, so you'll work closely with fellow mentors and educators to share best practices and resources while participating in training sessions to enhance your skills. Establishing positive relationships with students will be essential, as you'll act as a guide and role model. Additionally, you'll track attendance, maintain records of student progress, and communicate regularly with parents or guardians to keep them informed of their child's development. Every day will be an opportunity to inspire and empower students in their reading journey. What matters most To succeed as a United Readers Mentor, you'll need a genuine passion for reading and a strong desire to foster that same enthusiasm in students. Excellent communication skills are essential, as you'll be interacting with children, parents, and education professionals daily. A patient and empathetic demeanor will help you create a supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks in their learning. Strong organizational skills will enable you to tailor reading sessions effectively and track student progress accurately. Additionally, adaptability is important, as you'll encounter diverse learning styles and varying levels of reading proficiency. Creativity will also play a vital role, allowing you to design engaging activities that capture students' interests and keep them motivated. Lastly, being a team player and possessing a collaborative spirit will ensure you build meaningful relationships with both your students and colleagues, enhancing the overall mentorship experience. POSITION SUMMARY United Readers Mentors will assist students, kindergarten through fifth grade, in Southern Nevada with literacy skills to improve fluency. Using a pre-determined curriculum and lesson plans, and in conjunction with the school's learning facilitators, mentors will conduct lessons and activities with small groups of students during reading intervention blocks. United Readers Mentors support United Way of Southern Nevada's goal to increase the number of students proficient in reading. This position serves as an ambassador for the United Readers Program and overcoming the barriers students face in their learning gaps. The goal of United Readers is to provide students with literacy intervention to build their foundational reading skills, with the objective of improving third grade reading scores in Southern Nevada. United Readers supports UWSN's mission of providing learning opportunities for children and students from Pre-K through higher education. United Readers empowers students by providing them with the fundamental tools they need to build long-term resilience and confidence to be a lifelong learner.

Requirements

  • Mentors must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Candidates must be able to perform duties during the school day.
  • Mentors should be interested in or have experience with education or a related field, a community and service mindset, and be willing to learn.
  • Must have a desire to work with small children and be able to explain lessons and activities clearly and effectively.
  • Position requires patience and collaboration with other mentors and staff as well as through Microsoft and Google suites.
  • Basic computer skills and comfortable with Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have a valid, government-issued photo ID.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with young children and child development is encouraged but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead groups of students in accordance with the provided curriculum, lesson plans, and training.
  • Lead and develop age and content-appropriate activities based on child's assessed and identified needs.
  • Provide a safe and respectful learning experience and space for children.
  • Facilitate and score assessments.
  • Review, analyze, and set goals for students according to assessment and other data.
  • Submit data consistently by appropriate deadlines.
  • Communicate with school site staff and program staff.
  • Attend required training days and orientation sessions.
  • Professionally represent and be an ambassador for UWSN in accordance with UWSN policies and procedures.
