About The Position

The Unit Technician at Parkland Health and Hospital System plays a crucial role in coordinating patient care and administrative needs within the unit. This position serves as the primary contact for the unit, assisting doctors, nurses, patients, and their families. The Unit Technician is responsible for performing phlebotomy tasks, drawing labs, and ensuring effective communication and service delivery within the healthcare team. This role is essential for maintaining patient-centered care and supporting the overall mission of the organization.

Requirements

  • Must have completed a formal nurse aide course, medical assistant course, or patient care technician course, or hold a current certification in these areas.
  • One year of experience in a healthcare setting is required, or successful completion of Parkland's job-specific training program can be considered equivalent.
  • Must have a current Heartsaver CPR course completion card within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in the capacity of a Patient Care Assistant and a Health Unit Coordinator.
  • Conduct phlebotomy tasks and lab draws as needed for the assigned unit.
  • Act as the primary contact for the unit, coordinating patient care and clerical needs while responding to information requests.
  • Provide specified patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse, including hygiene care, injections, and vital signs monitoring.
  • Serve as a patient advocate, responding to needs and maintaining open communication with patients and families.
  • Prepare and process patient files, ensuring accurate and complete records are maintained.
  • Monitor ongoing patient status and assist nurses in handling patient care needs.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge patients, managing charts and patient valuables.
  • Maintain accurate records of activities performed in accordance with nursing unit standards.
  • Ensure the work environment adheres to infection prevention and care guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable rules and regulations impacting the unit.
  • Order and deliver medical and non-medical supplies, ensuring work areas are stocked appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
