POSITION SUMMARY: Performs a variety of clerical support and other duties to assist the nursing staff in carrying out daily patient care activities. Prepares and maintains patient medical records. Transcribes and expedites physician orders. Functions as a receptionist. Creates a caring and compassionate environment through Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, and Communication. Contributes to a safe, structured, and therapeutic milieu. Reports to the Clinical Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills are desirable.
  • Must be able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must be capable of taking swift and efficient action, including patient restraint when responding to patient emergency codes.
  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required, along with some knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must be trained in de-escalation techniques, as prescribed by ECHN.

Responsibilities

  • Meets, greets, and directs all patients, families, visitors, and health care team members. Provides accurate and appropriate information. Displays and promotes sensitivity to the confidentiality needs of the psychiatric inpatient as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Prepares medical records for new admissions and discharged patients. Maintains accurate medical record during patient stay as evidenced by supervisor observation and chart audits.
  • Transcribes physician’s orders in a timely manner as evidenced by supervisor observation and chart audits. Enters orders in the computer system. Prioritizes orders by identifying those with timed or immediate action. Notifies appropriate nursing staff or department.
  • Responds appropriately and timely to patient requests, including prompt acknowledgement to patient call bell as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Demonstrates an ability to float to different patient care units and function effectively in different situations as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Demonstrates an ability to prioritize, be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, to promote efficient functioning of the unit as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Answers telephone/intercom in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Orders supplies, processes work orders, enters charges and performs other coordinating activities to maintain unit operations as evidenced by feedback from team members and supervisor observation.
  • Effectively uses psychological and physical management techniques to manage violent or potentially violent situations consistent with e escalation training as evidenced by peer and supervisor observation.
  • Possesses knowledge of and adheres to all safety and security policies of the unit; implements emergency calls, including such calls for the Early Response Team (ERT) and “Dr. Strong” team as directed by clinical staff as evidenced by supervisor observation.
  • Assists in the assignment of patients to the attending psychiatrists within the guidelines established by the Medical Director as evidenced by supervisor observation and feedback from attending psychiatrists.
