Requirements

  • High School or GED equivalent plus medical terminology preferred.
  • 1-2 years experience, preferrably within healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Answers and responds to patient call lights/request promptly by informing appropriate staff member of patient's request and ensuring effective resolution.
  • Answers telephone before third ring, identifies self and department, relays message to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Performs all secretarial duties in a timeframe consistent with hospital policies and within time allotted.
  • Maintains professionalism in greeting and directing visitors; efficiently, providing information in a competent manner.
  • Operates all equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and/or hospital policy and procedure and assures timely communication of needed repairs to the appropriate department.
  • Keeps Director/Team Leader and/or Charge Nurse updated regarding unit issues in a timely manner.
  • Performs newly assigned duties upon completion of training and cooperates in performing other departmental duties as assigned, demonstrating a positive attitude.
  • Participates in department improvement initiatives.
  • Willingly participates in cross training in order to increase job knowledge and skills.
  • Assists in orientation of new nursing personnel as assigned by charge nurse, team leader or unit director.
  • Performs effectively during crisis or emergency situations by: Accurately prepares chart, including patient labeling of all chart materials, accurately inputting nursing orders into the computer system.
  • Keeps chart materials in order at all times, adding necessary forms with patient's name and medical record number as needed.
  • Maintains par levels of forms, materials, and supplies.
  • Promotes a professional environment by: Consistently demonstrates etiquette as evidenced by the following: Maintains clean, safe and functional working environment in the nursing unit:
  • Accurately maintains physician call list.
  • Obtain daily cardiology interventionalists on call.
  • Initiates all pages to appropriate physicians or other hospital departments logging all calls on telephone call log.
  • Pages correct staff or physician for emergent/disaster events.
  • Process patient's chart, making sure that the labels are adhere throughout the medical record.
  • Strips chart with accuracy.
  • Accurately enters patient charges into computer system, enters data accurately and in a timely manner, Ensure accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Maintain an accurate patient list in the emergency department for patient tracking.
  • Efficient in utilization of emergency department dedicated tracking system.
  • Utilizes overhead paging system when appropriate.
  • Assist callers in locating patients.
  • Operates all equipment in accordance with the manufacture's recommendations and/or hospital policy and procedure and assures timely communications of needed repairs to the appropriate department.
