About The Position

The Unit Manager - RN oversees the nursing operations and provides leadership for a designated unit within a healthcare, long-term care, or assisted living facility. This role involves managing nursing staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, creating and implementing individualized care plans, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards. The Unit Manager - RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure the physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being of all residents in the unit.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing).
  • Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of nursing experience, preferably in a long-term care or healthcare setting, with at least 1 year in a leadership or management role.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, care planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Supervision: Supervise and manage the nursing staff, including RNs, LPNs, and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), ensuring they provide high-quality care.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and offer coaching and professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Create staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for each shift while managing time-off requests and overtime.
  • Address staffing issues, such as call-offs, and provide timely solutions to ensure proper coverage and care delivery.
  • Patient Care and Management: Oversee the care of residents, ensuring that each patient receives individualized, comprehensive care in accordance with their care plan.
  • Conduct assessments of residents' conditions and update care plans accordingly.
  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, including physicians, therapists, and social workers, to ensure coordinated care.
  • Provide direct nursing care when necessary, such as administering medications, treatments, and performing clinical procedures.
  • Care Plan Development and Implementation: Develop and update care plans based on resident assessments, ensuring they align with residents' medical, emotional, and psychological needs.
  • Participate in resident care conferences, advocating for appropriate care interventions and adjustments to treatment plans as needed.
  • Ensure all nursing staff follow care plans, delivering services in a timely, respectful, and safe manner.
  • Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including nursing care standards, infection control protocols, and resident rights.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) system, ensuring compliance with regulatory and facility standards.
  • Conduct regular audits of clinical documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepare for and participate in facility inspections, surveys, and audits, implementing corrective actions when needed.
  • Quality Assurance and Improvement: Monitor and assess the quality of care provided in the unit, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective measures.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives, including infection control measures, fall prevention programs, and pressure sore management.
  • Regularly review resident outcomes, care processes, and staff performance, making recommendations for improvements in care delivery.
  • Resident and Family Relations: Serve as the primary point of contact for residents and their families regarding care plans, health status updates, and other concerns.
  • Address resident and family concerns promptly and professionally, escalating issues to facility leadership when necessary.
  • Ensure that residents' dignity, privacy, and personal preferences are respected, and that they are treated with compassion and professionalism.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with other department heads and healthcare professionals to ensure that residents receive holistic care.
  • Communicate regularly with staff, residents, and families regarding any changes in care plans, treatments, or overall health status.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care meetings, care planning sessions, and quality assurance discussions.
