About The Position

The Unit Manager (DOC) position involves serving as the administrator and supervisor of a multi-disciplinary team of staff members assigned to work within a specific offender unit. The role directs the operations of a semi-autonomous unit within a correctional institution. Responsibilities include supervising and evaluating the performance of unit staff, providing on-the-job training, monitoring case management activities, and maintaining a clean, safe, humane, and secure unit environment. The Unit Manager coordinates unit operations with other institution programs, administers the budget work programs, and manages the procurement of equipment and supplies. The position also involves acting as a liaison with various agencies, submitting reports to institutional leadership, and resolving emergency or extraordinary correctional problems. Additionally, the Unit Manager is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing programs tailored to the needs of inmates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience in correctional records management or social casework.
  • Experience in a professional administrative position with responsibilities for maintaining inmate records.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Knowledge of modern penological practices.

  • Experience in contract negotiation and procurement procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of unit staff members.
  • Provides on-the-job training to staff members as required.
  • Monitors case management activities.

  • Coordinates unit operations with other institution programs and operations.
  • Administers the operation of the budget work programs established for the unit.
  • Procures needed equipment and supplies.
  • Negotiates food service contracts.
  • Maintains security and control of offender records assigned to the unit.
  • Serves as chairperson of the Unit Disciplinary and Classification Committee.
  • Acts as a liaison with private and public agencies such as the courts and the Pardon and Parole Board.
  • Submits reports to the warden and/or deputy warden covering significant events.
  • Consults with institutional administration, security personnel, and inmates to resolve correctional problems.
  • Plans, develops, and implements group and individual programs for inmates.
