The Unit Clerk plays a vital role in providing clerical support within a patient care unit, ensuring efficient operations related to patient admission, discharge, and administrative tasks. This position involves a variety of responsibilities including managing patient records, answering telephones, and facilitating communication between patients, families, and healthcare staff. The Unit Clerk is essential in creating a welcoming environment and supporting the overall patient experience in the Emergency Room.

  • Provides clerical support on a patient care unit by preparing charts, forms, and menu requests.
  • Performs reception duties, answering telephones, relaying messages, and contacting patients' families and physicians as needed.
  • Supports and maintains a variety of non-clinical and ancillary services of assigned patient care units.
  • Greets visitors and manages patient call light processes to ensure patient needs are met.
  • Compiles statistics and data for reporting purposes and maintains census reports.
  • Receives physicians and visitors on the unit, creating an environment of service.
  • Ensures appropriate patient flow by admitting, transferring, and discharging patients in the computer system.
  • Schedules patient testing and assists in ordering and serving patient meals.
  • Prepares, fills, and reconciles supply orders and enters charges for services into the computer system.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting education and skills competency requirements.
  • One (1) year of extensive public contact/customer service experience.
  • Ability to perform clerical duties using a personal computer.
  • Knowledge of filing, forms completion, and record-keeping.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong organizational ability and customer service management skills.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions and communicate clearly and effectively.
