We conduct a Family Medicine Residency, Internal Medicine Residency, Cardiology Fellowship, Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship, PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and a School of Radiologic Technology. MercyOne North Iowa is a clinical training site for approximately 500 students from 127 different colleges enrolled in programs for medical laboratory, nursing, paramedic, rehabilitation, medical assistants, pastoral services, physicians and many other medical fields. Join the MercyOne Family! We are looking to hire a Unit Clerk in our Inpatient Behavioral Health! As a Unit Clerk at MercyOne, you will be under the supervision of the clinical nurse manager, clinical leader/charge and/or registered nurse performs receptionist and secretarial duties on the clinical unit. Serves as a communication liaison on the clinical unit. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assures the medical record is adequately supplied and in proper order. IE: prepare chart for admission, update patient information daily. Prioritizes requests for services and performs tasks in a timely manner. Assures the workstation equipment is functioning appropriately, office supplies are adequate (not excessive), and maintains an updated working knowledge of new equipment and technology. Keeps workstation/area organized, neat, and clean. Obtains supplies via phone and on-line ordering. Places calls and work orders to other departments as needed. Transcribes and/or enters written physician orders, completes necessary forms, requisitions, and communication of all orders approved/reviewed by RN. Places and maintains manual orders and prints appropriate downtime forms as needed. Answers telephone and provides information/messages to patients and medical staff in a professional and respectful manner. Maintains record (inventory) of computers and other equipment for all devices assigned to department/unit. Troubleshoots low-level computer/equipment issues. Performs routine maintenance on computers/equipment devices and utilizes appropriate processes/systems to communicate computer/equipment problems/issues. Handles patient paperwork, discharges, admissions etc. Arranges transportation services for patients’ admissions, appointments, and tests. Have adequate office skills such as organizing, filing, and scheduling. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne – North Iowa reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Basic computer experience required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to learn through on‑the‑job training.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and able to work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and adapt to changing department needs.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS): Proof of current BLS certification (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer—live class only) required prior to employment or within 60 days of hire, and must be maintained.
  • Mandatory Reporter Training: Proof of Iowa Mandatory Reporting training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse required prior to employment or within 6 months of hire, with ongoing compliance per State of Iowa guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Active CNA license preferred when assigned as a unit driver.
  • Clerical or administrative experience preferred.
