The opportunity We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Trainee to join our Specialty Property team based in our Chicago, IL office on a hybrid schedule. The Underwriting Trainee will engage in a formal pilot training program for 12 months that provides knowledge and exposure to the fundamental theories, principals and concepts of insurance and underwriting. Develops skills that contribute to technical support, service and underwriting to assigned producers on accounts. Includes assignments of low complexity such as authorizing renewals and endorsements under close supervision and in conjunction with experienced underwriters. Some of the Underwriting Trainee duties include but are not limited to: Assists in the functions of the underwriting department. Observes, questions and develops an understanding of the operations within the department as well as within the company in order to learn the principles of insurance and underwriting. Assists in the workflow process by organizing statistics and presentations with the underwriter. Processes routine endorsements on accounts while developing knowledge of the coverage therein. Attends in-house, college, and/or insurance courses. As assigned, complete department testing to measure understanding of work performed. Position will evolve to include additional responsibilities such as: directly servicing a book of business under close direction within defined authority limits. Documenting underwriting files and working with producers to develop all necessary account information for risk evaluation. Assists producers with basic questions on products and coverage. Begins to develop agency relationships. Travels with underwriters on agency visits to observe selling and marketing techniques. Performs basic portfolio analysis and makes recommendations to underwriters. Travel will be required.
