About The Position

Manage and provide leadership to the underwriting support staff to effectively develop premiums, prepare quotes, and issue and maintain policies for Broker/Specialty Markets. Assist personnel at all levels to properly rate, quote, issue, and maintain policies in compliance with underwriting policy and regulatory requirements. Provide policy information/special reports to executive management, others within Church Mutual, brokers, and insureds. Establish priorities and adjust workloads to meet completion dates. Build a strong working relationship with brokers and others outside and inside the company to attain corporate goals. Recruit, hire, train, appraise, and conduct salary administration for direct reporting staff members. Coach assigned personnel in setting and attaining professional development goals. Annually assist in the development of broker/specialty markets underwriting goals and objectives and the supporting budget. On any given day, you'll: In compliance with company policies and regulatory filings, provide leadership and manage the underwriting support staff to effectively develop premium for the underwriter's review, prepare quotes, and issue policies to meet set target dates and performance and quality expectations. Be responsible for providing various reports to executive management, brokers, insureds, and others on a timely basis. Assist underwriting support personnel to maintain and develop technical knowledge and expertise on Church Mutual products and processing systems. Be a resource within the department, share knowledge, and mentor and train others to recognize and resolve issues and concerns. Review and evaluate rating and pricing processes specific to the large accounts market. Make recommendations for enhancements and changes as appropriate. Build a strong working relationship with brokers, sales associates, and others within the company to attain corporate goals and enhance excellent service through providing technical knowledge and expertise of processing guidelines, philosophies, and general directives. Recruit, hire, train, appraise, and conduct salary administration for direct reporting staff members. Coach assigned personnel in setting professional development goals and attaining these goals. Work as a solid part of the broker/specialty markets underwriting management team, discussing underwriting issues, developing efficiencies, and identifying and assisting in resolving department needs. Continue to develop leadership skills through internal and external publications, seminars, and conferences. Share knowledge gained with peers. Participate/lead assigned projects and special research projects as necessary. Annually assist in developing broker/specialty markets underwriting goals and objectives and the supporting budget for Broker/Specialty Markets. Travel as necessary to visit brokers and insureds to assist in new or renewal presentations or foster business relationships.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of property and casualty insurance-related experience with a proven record of favorable working relationships with brokers or direct agents.
  • A strong background in quoting and issuing large (excess of $50,000 annual premium) property and casualty accounts and reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Significant knowledge of the property and casualty industry demonstrated from experience in underwriting, claims, risk management, etc., is desirable.
  • Previous management experience is desirable.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred but may consider comparable industry experience.
  • A CPCU designation or evidence of continuing education in the insurance industry is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to creatively quote large accounts.
  • Demonstrated superior knowledge of processing systems. A high level knowledge of underwriting tools, such as loss development, trending, large deductible products, loss projections, etc., is desirable.
  • Ability to foster and maintain excellent relationships with brokers, direct agents, and senior living representatives.
  • Knowledge of the underwriting function, insurance coverages, and rate making.
  • Knowledge of religion practices and religious organizations.
  • Strong judgment, decision-making, organizational, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by enhancing information flow through active listening and sharing.
  • Coaching skills to assist others to grow and attain their personal goals.

Nice To Haves
