About The Position

Join Builders Mutual as an Underwriting Intern and step beyond the classroom into an internship that matters. You’ll gain meaningful, hands-on experience while building a strong foundation of technical, leadership, and professional skills — all while contributing to work that drives real results. This internship will allow you to develop skills to understand how the underwriting function fits into the insurance process, focusing on risk selection and file documentation, and working on team projects. You will also learn about our products, underwriting appetite, and business processes that give us a competitive advantage in the industry.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Risk Management Insurance or Business, not graduating prior to December 2026 or after December 2027.
  • Desire to work for an NC-based regional carrier upon graduation.
  • Practical experience inside or outside of school or work.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience through group projects, clubs, or class engagement.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and interpersonal.
  • Proven team player who takes initiative and collaborates with others to achieve team goals.
  • High-level analytical capabilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and quick to learn new software or tools.
  • Ability to commit to a 10-week internship (May 18 - July 24) working 37.5 hours per week.
  • Willingness to live or commute to Raleigh during the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a one-week orientation and present a capstone project to executives at the end of the internship.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to claims and adjuster workflows through training and shadowing.
  • Receive coaching, career feedback, and regular guidance from an intern manager.
  • Contribute to the community through volunteer opportunities as part of the GiveBack initiative.
  • Participate in professional development workshops and leadership roundtables at Builders University.
  • Build relationships with leaders, peers, and a dedicated intern buddy through networking opportunities.
